Objective 1 Modules

Introduction to Perennial Grasses as a Feedstock

This module discusses the reasons that perennial grasses are a suitable feedstock for biofuel production.

Objective 2 Modules

Perennial Grass Growth and Development Module

Central to understanding management of perennial grasses in traditional range and pasture and advanced biomass energy production systems is having a firm understanding of how grasses grow and develop.  In this lesson module you will learn about the physiology, growth and development of perennial grasses. Specific topics covered include structures and functions of grass seeds, seedling establishment, morphological structure and functions, and leaf and tiller growth. In addition, methods are provided to teach students how to quantify developmental morphology of a population of tillers and choose appropriate management technologies based on these values.  This module is written for beginning plant science students and will be useful for advanced high school students or introductory undergraduates.  Extension audiences wishing to learn more about perennial grasses will also find the lesson helpful.

Establishment of Switchgrass and Other Perennial Grass Stands

Production of perennial grasses in traditional range and pasture, as well as in advanced biomass energy systems, requires successful initial establishment.  In this lesson module you will learn about the role of soil and specific perennial grass needs in the establishment process.  Specific topics covered include soil sampling techniques, soil chemical properties, and the use of fertilizer in the establishment of perennial grasses.  This module is written for beginning plant science students and will be useful for advanced high school students or introductory undergraduates.  Extension audiences wishing to learn more about perennial grasses will also find the lesson helpful.
